The percentage of websites out there that are truly mobile-friendly is not an easy question to answer. Slippery definitions of the term, and widely varying needs among different segments of the internet-using population, have made the subject rather controversial. According to a study published in Marketingland back in 2015, experts could at least agree that the number fell somewhere between 11.8% of websites and 82% of websites!
The writers of that aforementioned article argued that the number was most likely at the lower end of the spectrum, demonstrating that most businesses were more likely to overstate their capabilities than to understate them when being polled. Even if we accept an intermediate number, such as 40%, and even if we assume that the number has grown over the past year, it is still far more likely than not that less than half of all websites are truly mobile responsive.
These numbers make it clear that far too many business owners are missing out on the benefits that a mobile-friendly web design could offer. Here are a few reasons why you should consider upgrading, if you haven’t already:
- Visitor experience. First and foremost, in order to get the most out of your website, you need all of your users to have a wonderful experience: being mobile friendly is a basic stepping stone toward achieving this goal.
- Cost. Although developing a mobile-friendly site may represent an up-front investment of funds and resources, in the long run it is far more cost-efficient than running a separate mobile site.
- SEO. In mid-2015, Google announced that mobile-friendly websites would receive a boost in search engine rankings. Many website owners invest heavy funds into search engine optimization anyway, and making your site mobile friendly is a pragmatic way to do this.
- Mobile is the future. Mobile represent a higher percentage of internet users each and every year, and this trend appears set to continue for a long time. Put yourself in a position to succeed both now and in the future by investing in mobile friendly design.
